I have been living in Wisconsin for a few years now but kept my Illinois driver's license for several reasons. Most importantly, the state of Wisconsin gives only 2-year temporary license to those who have driven in the U.S. for less than three years. When I move to WI, my IL license was only a year old so it was obvious that I would get a 2-year license and then have to renew. I decided to wait until I would become eligible for a regular license and then I got lazy...until I found out that my IL license was soon to expire. I never wanted to take the driving test again so hurried to the DMV and got a new license.
The weird thing is...when I saw my IL licence got "void" mark on it, I felt sort of sad even when I lived there only for a year and all I miss is the flatness of the land there (and cornfields! haha). I visit IL at least once a year -- mostly the destination is the Chicago O'Hare airport or H-Mart (a big Korean grocery store). Also, I had disadvantages for being a holder of out of state license, especially when I got ticketed by driving violations. The police officers give me this look: "Hmm, you don't live here."
Another thing is, I was given a "federally compliant" Real ID. When a staff member at the DMV asked me whether I would want to get a Real ID, I asked back "So I get a fake ID if I choose not to have a Real ID?" He gave me this "who's this weirdo?" look and said I would have to get it later anyway so I got one. The Real ID is to provide information on me to the Federal government as well as the state government. Some people show concerns of privacy for having this Real ID but I did not mind. I have already given them all my personal information and even finger prints as a potential terrorist visitor from a foreign country. I also have to report to the Immigration every time I move. The Read ID has been in effect only a few years now and we will have to wait and see how the privacy thing will play out.
With all these feelings inside me, I have officially settled in Wisconsin...only until I leave this state in a few years when I complete my degree.
